So we all know organic is better. It is also way more expensive. It was proposed to me that if you aren’t 100% organic in what you eat, drink, clean you face and body or your home with, them you are contaminated.
Okay, so lets all go live in a bubble.
If we believe the fatalists, then any effort is a waste of time. But thankfully I don’t.
In Thich Nhat Hahn‘s book, Mindful Eating, Mindful Life, he writes (and I paraphrase from memory) if you eat a chicken that has grown up in a small cage packed with other chickens who have been force fed, beaks removed so the scared angry chickens don’t hurt each other and get all bloody, then you will eat their anger. I think it’s a bold analogy but it rings true with me. Recently, I was driving down the highway with my sister and we saw a few dead chickens on the side of the road. As we drove on, we passed a truck that was full of chickens stuffed in little cages. Brutal. But this is our modern food chain.
Since then, I only eat free range “chooks” and eggs. And another point that I try and follow from Thich Nhat Hahn is that yes, eating responsibly is more expensive but we eat too much. So eat well by eating less.
I believe that any effort to improve health, regardless of how big or small, is a step in the right direction. And we all cheat ourselves sometimes. For example, I am wheat free but yesterday I didn’t have great options so I ate wheat. Today I move on. We can often get a good sense of our state of mind by how we react when we do something we have said we wouldn’t do, especially when it comes to food. I could have thrown it in and had fresh baguette for breakfast, weetabix, you get the picture. But I have no guilt about it. I didn’t let myself down I made a decision in the moment that I stand behind.
How often do you make decisions that you second guess yourself about? Honestly, I keep saying it, food is a great place to start. So many of us have many issues that cloud our minds and confuse us into making stupid choices. Then we try and tackle them on such a grandiose scale that we cannot ever succeed. We set ourselves up for failure. Keep it small, small successes are still successes. And if all you can do to take one step in the right direction is to eat free range eggs ( or whatever is on your mind) then go for it.
It really is the little things that count.
